DRAWBACKS

  • Abnormal cells in the Pap smear can indicate cervical cancer as well as a precancerous stage. There is always a need for further examination with the GP or gynaecologist.
  • A precancerous stage of cervical cancer is almost always treated. Some precancerous stages may simply resolve spontaneously. However, no-one can predict that. It is therefore better to play it safe.
  • Having a Pap smear and waiting for the result can be stressful and make you anxious or worried.
  • As with any other screening examination, the result never offers 100% certainty. In case of complaints such as unusual blood loss, it is always best to contact your GP or gynaecologist.
